Mumbai is the most populous city in India. In a country that is home to more than one billion people, that is saying something. In fact, by some measures Mumbai is the most populous city in the world with an estimated population of 13 million as of 2006. That is a whole lot of people living in a not so large area. Throw in the extra 12 million who live in the Mumbai metropolitan area and you can be well assured that you will have plenty of opportunity to meet, bump into, touch and see the locals while you travel to the commercial and entertainment capital of India.
Even with the endless sea of humanity that lives in Mumbai, it is possible on occasion to find a quiet place to sit back and reflect on life. The city has a nice selection of parks and gardens that offer up a welcome respite from the noise, pollution and hustle that you will find in most parts of Mumbai. One of the best is Kamala Nehru Park which is located at the top of Mumbai’s Malabar Hill. Named after the wife of India’s first prime minister, the garden offers a spectacular view of the city. It is also a great place to watch Indian children play in a giant shoe inspired by the nursery rhyme.
