To be perfectly honest, most of the prices I’m seeing don’t really appear to be 70% off, although they are very good deals. I think perhaps they came up with that number based on winter specials compared to peak summer prices. One of the other great things about going to Thailand is that cheap hotels in Bangkok are very easy to find, and quality is high even when spending around £20 per night per couple. Similar hotels in Paris would cost £70 per night, and finding good Thai food in Paris isn’t nearly as easy as well.
