Timbuktu is a place of legends. Its remote location in the remote Tombouctou Region in Mali has conquered up images in travelers’ minds for centuries. Established by the nomadic Tuareg peoples in the 10th Century, Timbuktu grew to become a center of Islam in Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries. The legacy of this period can be seen today in the city’s three great historic mosques, Djingareyber, Sankore and Sidi Yahya.

The stories that visitors have brought back from the city have only helped to create the exotic image that so many people now associate with it.
