Located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto, ON is the fifth largest city in North America, with a population of roughly five million. It is the seat of government for Ontario, Canada’s most populated province.
Settled by the indigenous First Nations groups, the name Toronto comes from a Huron word for meeting place. French traders moved in to settle at Fort Rouillé, followed by the United Empire Loyalists, who were fleeing the American Revolution in the late 1700s. At that time, Toronto was called York. Fort York was the site of the Battle of York during the War of 1812 and is today a National Historic site.
Diverse to the max, Toronto is home to more than 100 cultures, with over 100 languages and dialects spoken and a population that is 42% non-Caucasian.
Toronto has the largest gay population in Canada – Pride Week is one of the three largest Pride events in the world.
Toronto’s currency is the Canadian Dollar with coins for denominations under five dollars that include the ‘Loonie’ (one dollar coin) and ‘Two-nie’ (two dollar coin).
