Don’t get Burned, Head to Berne for some Fantastic Skiing
Often overshadowed by Switzerland’s other cities Berne is an underrated city that is great for a city break or a ski holiday. The Swiss capital is ideally situated about an hour away from some of the finest mountains and skiing on this planet. It is indeed the ideal gateway to the Alps but it is also a city that warrants some exploration of its own.
Berne is the fourth most populated city in Switzerland and it has a distinctly German feel to it. The city was originally built on a peninsula engulfed by the river Aar but outgrew the natural boundaries of the river in the 19th century. The following bridges were built to allow the city to grow outside of the boundaries imposed by the river: Berne’s city center is largely medieval and has been recognised by UNESCO as a Cultural World Heritage Site. The most famous and recognizable sight is the Zytglogge, a fancy medieval clock tower with moving puppets. No trip to Berne would be complete without also paying a visit to the Rosengarten, a park where you can get a lovely view of the city and the surrounding countryside.
Berne offers the best of both worlds. It is quaint urban town with a proximity to the mountain powder. You can also find cheap flights to Berne this time of year and cheap accommodations that won’t leave you feeling like you got burned.
