Frankfurt is the door to the world
If you are an experienced globe trotter, you probably have spent a smidgeon of time in the Frankfurt, Germany airport. Along with Heathrow and Charles de Gaulle International Airport, it is one of the global hubs of Europe. Walk down the corridors and you’ll find flights departing for just about every corner of the globe and you’ll hear more languages spoken than you would spending a day at the United Nations. Frankfurt is the place to go when you want to go somewhere else.
That isn’t to say that you should spend all your time at the airport. If you are lucky enough to have a long layover or some extra time, you can hop on a train and head straight into the city to do some exploring. Situated on the Main River, Frankfurt is a financial hub for Germany. The city is quite modern, but it is worth your effort to make your way down to the old part of town where you can see sights like the Gothic Saint Bartholmeus Cathedral, which was built in the 14th Century. Also check out the Römer, the town hall that dates back to 1405. If history isn’t your thing, there’s always the Red Light district, as well as various high end shopping areas to explore.
Flights to Frankfurt are usually very affordable and you can currently pick up a nice deal from London on Lufthansa. If you don’t want to sleep on the airport floor during your layover, there are plenty of affordable youth hostels to choose from, including the very reliable Ritter Hotel.
