Back in the day, I used to spend a little bit of time in Budapest as did a lot of people who were teaching TEFL. The city was still kind of grungy in a post-Communist Bloc kind of way, but also exciting because each new day brought new things like Dunkin Donuts and Pizza Hut. As cliché as it might sound, people were excited about this progress and about their future. You could feel it in the air and you could sense it on the streets.
Budapest has cleaned up a lot since then, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that it is a cool place for the traveler. The city has no shortage of history and sightseeing opportunities and it thankfully offers more to eat than donuts and pizza. If you like paprika, you’ll love Hungary. They put it in everything. There also is a happening nightlife and very affordable accommodations.
