Helga's Folly – Book your bed
Helga's Folly is a tranquil base for excursions to the northen temples of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and the spectacular Sigiriya rock as well as the tea estates around Nuwara Eliya which in the 19th century was Lipton' tea gardens. It is therapy for the stressed out visitor who seeks that magic oriental soul-balm. Wake up to the sight of the shining golden roof of the Temple of the Tooth Relic across the lake, the mist rolling around the sweep of Hunnasgiriya and the Knuckles ranges and monkeys playing on the roof.
What draws so many here is the delightful country-house atmosphere. It is very much a true Sri Lankan home, cosy with historic bric-a-brac scattered throughout its many sitting and sun-filled reading rooms and the wide-open kitchens.
All the rooms are private with all the facilities that you will possibly need. Each of the 30 rooms tells its own story and commands its own spectacular view. Each room also has its own distinctive decor, with ensuite bathrooms and balconies affording spectacular views. Many rooms have 4-poster beds.
This house is a bold, flaring salute to the arts where the power of human expression has created sunbursts of colour and cloudbursts of grim wooden and stucco figures; sharp water-pistol shots of drenching silver, the long bustle of wall murals, old paints, cupboards of tamarind and ebony and life-sized ancient wooden figures. Every one of the 40 rooms has its own distinctive decor tells its story, and commands its own spectacular view.
Dinner is candlelit and many choose to dine on the balcony with the city lights below reflected in the lake. The food is a tribute to innovative and traditional cooking, and the joy is in the experimentation. Guests bring recipes to try out and help themselves to the fresh-baked hot rolls.
